Rocket League Review (Update)

Rocket League has come a long way for a unique game. The game comes with a weird feature where you play soccer with rocket-powered flying cars. The original concept came from Psyonix's first failed game, " Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars " aka, SARPBC. The objective, like normal soccer, is to score a goal on the opposing team. The catch? The other team can destroy your vehicle forcing you to respawn and effectively leaving your goal open. You may also have to adjust to a different teammate(s) who think during your first few games in Casual or even Competitive mode. Psyonix was able to reasonably balance their matchmaking; however, with the help of the acquisition from Epic Games, the same studio that made Fortnite and helped fund Rocket League in the first place. The concept is enjoyable nonetheless and it is great to play with others.

Rocket League has recently also adopted a “Rocket Pass”, similar to Fortnite’s Battle Pass, where players can grind through competitive and casual games to earn new items, accessories, cars, and banners, whether through a free or premium pass. If you are not interested in Soccer, you can even play other mini-games such as Basketball, as the name suggests, Power-Ups, where you try to score a goal with power-ups similar to Mario Kart, and Drop Out, where the floor becomes your breakable goal. It also helps that while playing these games you get to experience music from artists Psyonix struck deals with like Monstercat, Marshmello, or even plug in your own Spotify playlist.

The game is very accessible with a price of $20, but it’s usually less with the occasional sells. You can get the game on nearly any platform on Switch, Steam (PC and Macs), Xbox One and Playstation. Just get ready for when the game becomes an Epic Games exclusive, a move not so popular for the Rocket League community. With such an interesting concept, despite the controversial acquisition, I believe Rocket League will continue to thrive.
